Abstract

Basilar artery occlusions (BAO) in adults are associated with high mortality and severe sequelae; pediatric cases are rare, and data in the literature are limited. Endovascular therapy (EVT) is recommended in many studies for BAO in adults, given its high associated rates of mortality and morbidity. However, its use in the pediatric age group is controversial. There are no large-scale studies, and restricted data are available in the form of case reports. This is primarily due to the low incidence of stroke in the pediatric population, which leads to delayed diagnosis. This report presents the detection of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) accompanying BAO in a 12-year-old male patient, the process of revascularization with emergency endovascular therapy (EVT), and the subsequent planned AVF closure.
