The Sacrum as a Biocultural Keystone: Integrating Biomechanics, Neurofunction, and Meaning

Abstract
The sacrum is a central structure in pelvic anatomy, forming the base of the spine and providing mechanical stability while protecting the sacral nerve roots responsible for continence, coordinated movement, and sexual function. Its role extends beyond biomechanics into what may be described as a form of biocultural anatomy, where anatomical function intersects with meaning-making processes.
Across different traditions, the sacrum has been associated with persistence, regeneration, and continuity, giving rise to enduring patterns of cultural symbolism. This raises a fundamental question: what underlies this consistent attribution of meaning?
Findings from taphonomy indicate that post-mortem preservation is primarily shaped by environmental conditions as opposed to by the intrinsic properties of specific bones, challenging explanations based on material durability.
A more compelling interpretation emerges when considering the sacrum’s role in life. Through its contribution to neurofunction, structural stability, and reproductive support, it occupies a uniquely consequential position in the human body.
In this sense, its symbolic significance may be understood not as a consequence of what remains after death, but of what is indispensable during life.
