A Bibliometric Analysis Of Publications On Epilepsy Surgery In Pediatric Patients Between 1980 and 2024

Abstract

Aim
This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of publications on epilepsy surgery in pediatric patients from 1980 to 2024, aiming to map the evolution, trends, and research hotspots in this field.

Material and Methods
Using the Web of Science (WoS) All Databases, we searched for articles on pediatric epilepsy surgery with keywords including "epilepsy surgery," "pediatric," and specific surgical techniques. Inclusion criteria encompassed original articles focusing on patients aged 0–18, small case reports, and non-surgical interventions. Data on authors, institutions, journals, citations, and keywords were analyzed using VOSviewer and R software to visualize publication trends and thematic clusters. Supplementary searches in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar ensured comprehensive coverage.

Results
Of 731 identified publications, 468 original articles met inclusion criteria. Publication volume surged, with 56.4% occurring in the last decade, peaking in 2020 (36 articles). The United States led with 46.8% of publications, followed by Canada and Germany. Wayne State University and Epilepsia were the top institutions and journals, respectively. Keyword analysis highlighted "epilepsy surgery" and "outcomes" as research hotspots, with an emerging focus on EEG and minimally invasive techniques. Highly cited works emphasized seizure freedom and neuropsychological outcomes.

Conclusion
Pediatric epilepsy surgery research has grown significantly, driven by advancements in surgical techniques and diagnostics, but global disparities persist, with limited contributions from low-income countries. Future research should prioritize minimally invasive approaches, standardized outcome measures, and international collaboration to enhance global access and outcomes.
